If you're a college football fan, you've likely heard of the CU Buffs nicknamed the Buffaloes.

The buffs have a rich history and loyal following. Let's take a closer look at CU Buffs football and what makes this team so special.

History

The CU Buffs football team has been around since 1890, making it one of the oldest football programs in the country. Over the years, the Buffs have had their fair share of successes and struggles. They've won a national championship, a conference championship, and made numerous bowl game appearances. However, they've also had some down years and coaching changes that have impacted the program.

One of the most notable periods of success for the Buffs was in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Led by head coach Bill McCartney, the team won three Big Eight conference championships and a national championship in 1990. The Buffs also had some memorable players during this time, including running back Eric Bieniemy and quarterback Kordell Stewart.

In recent years, the Buffs have struggled to find consistent success on the field. However, they've had some bright spots, including winning the Pac-12 South division in 2016 and earning a trip to the conference championship game. Head coach Karl Dorrell is now at the helm of the program and is working to build a winning culture in Boulder.

Traditions

One of the things that makes CU Buffs football so special is its rich traditions. Here are a few of the most notable ones:

Ralphie the Buffalo: Perhaps the most famous tradition associated with CU Buffs football is Ralphie the Buffalo. Ralphie is a live buffalo that leads the team onto the field before games. It's a tradition that dates back to 1934 and is a beloved part of the game day experience.

The ThunderRiders: Before every game, a group of horseback riders known as the ThunderRiders circle the field with flags bearing the CU logo. It's a dramatic and exciting way to kick off the game.

Fight Song: The CU Buffs have a rousing fight song that is played after every touchdown and at other key moments during the game. It's a great way to get the crowd fired up and show support for the team.

Game Day Experience

Attending a CU Buffs football game is an experience unlike any other. Folsom Field, the team's home stadium, is located in the heart of Boulder and offers stunning views of the nearby Flatirons. On game day, the stadium is packed with fans wearing black and gold and cheering on the Buffs.

In addition to the on-field action, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy before and after the game. Tailgating is a popular pre-game activity, with fans setting up tents and grilling food in the parking lots around the stadium. There are also plenty of local bars and restaurants where fans can gather to watch the game and enjoy some food and drinks.

CU Buffs football has a rich history, beloved traditions, and a passionate fan base. While the team has had its ups and downs over the years, there's no denying the excitement and energy that comes with being a Buffs fan. If you're looking for a college football team to support, the CU Buffs are definitely worth considering.
