Boulder Economic Council Feb 2018 Update

Clif Herald from the Boulder Economic Council met with us this morning to bring us up to speed on some crucial issues in the local economy.

Overall, some highlights include key points such as only about 50% of the workers in Boulder actually live in the city. While this sounds bad, it’s actually quite typical for many metro areas and cities that are part of a major metro area.

The job numbers are at some of the historically highest for our ever at about 100,000 jobs in the city and about 200,000 jobs in Boulder County.

Unemployment is at it’s lowest point in decades hovering at around 1.9% last fall, and still around 2.5% currently according to Richard L. Wobbekind is Executive Director of the Business Research Division and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs at the University of Colorado Boulder, as relayed to us by Mr. Herald.  Also, Herald told us that Wobbekind indicated that these numbers essentially indicate ‘full employment. (Apparently anything under about 3% is considered full employment.

Another key data point we learned is that Boulder has seen over $400 million invested in the local start up community from venture capital in the last year.

Some of this might also be driving the Bloomberg assigned label to Boulder as the Brainiest City, measured by the education level of Boulder residents. Apparently Boulder folks are some of the most educated around.

Stay tuned for more economic info from my meeting with  Clif Herald from the Boulder Economic Council soon.
