Rocky Flats Lounge Coming Back

For years I’ve driven by the Rocky Flats Lounge on highway 93 between Boulder and Golden. Then in July of 2015 I went by and noticed it was closed and had been damaged severely by fire. Rumors have spread for the last couple years about whether or not they’d rebuild and reopen.

Nothing really seems to have changed over the last couple years except maybe a tarp or piece of plywood coming and going with the wind.

Then, we hear recently that the owner is beginning to clean the building out and prepare to rebuild. Sounds like maybe our Wisconsin transplants and fish fry fans will have one of their famous haunts back again after all.

The bar first opened in 1960, and even once was used as the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Facility payroll office long ago.

The Rocky Flats facility was a primary customer base through many decades.

This came about primarily because it sits very near the former western entrance to the Rocky Flats operation.

Many folks shied away from stopping at the lounge as it had kind of a seedy  and rough look.

However I’ve heard many stories of friends or friend’s parents making their way back to Boulder from Golden getting caught in the vicious winter weather that blows across highway 93 and taking shelter in the lounge. I’ve stopped in many times with friends, especially those from out of town, on the way down to Golden to take a tour of the Coors brewery and Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, Colorado

In 1981 the previous owner started a tradition of having a Wisconsin Fish Fry on Friday nights. Usually catfish, perch and Lake Superior walleye.

The current owner bought the business in 1982 and in 1985 started showing Green Bay Packer football games in the bar which was extremely popular for many years.

Since the building was deemed sound, and issues about insurance and costs have been settled, the owners are embarking on what may be a very long endeavor to rebuild.
