Boulder’s Ball Aerospace Latest Satellite To Feed NOAA/NWS

Ball Aerospace has a large presence in Boulder, Colorado and we’ve been very fortunate to have so many great tech and space oriented jobs here.

There are several labs in Boulder thanks to the foresight of Boulder planners decades ago when they made a deal with the federal government to donate land in what was once unused space very far from town. That’s certainly changed!

Ball Aerospace collaborates with many other businesses and labs in town and the most recent example of that is the new Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPPS-1) which was designed by Boulder’s Ball Aerospace group.

NASA TV will begin live coverage of the launch beginning at  2:15 a.m. MST on Nov. 14 and conclude after the CubeSat deployment.

This is the nation’s next generation of polar-orbiting satellites, and it’s set to launch at O-dark thirty in the am tomorrow!

The satellite will be referred to as NOAA-20 once it’s in the polar orbit as it will be feeding the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to service National Weather Service models.

This is the first of four satellites planned as part of our nation’s latest generation of polar-orbiting satellite systems.

Originally due to launch last Friday, there was a slight delay due to small issue with the lift rocket’s termination system battery.

The mission is a joint effort with NOAA and NASA, and launch is actually scheduled for 02:47 MST Tuesday at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base. It’ll head into space aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg.

JPSS polar satellites are designed to orbit the Earth from pole-to-pole, crossing the equator about 14 times daily, and provide full global coverage twice a day.

NOAA expects to see advances in both short and long-term forecasting to assist weather professionals predict severe events.
