Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle Fifth Term Possible

Boulder County appears to love the current Sherrif, Joe Pelle, who’s been in office for almost 20 years. Although no public official maintains 100% favor, Sheriff Pelle seems to be an outstanding force on the local law enforcement scene.

While other county offices seem to turn over staff, the Sheriff’s office isn’t in that mix. Pelle has managed to secure a fifth four-year term option as voters approved a ballot issue recently to change the term limits for his office.

Since 2002 Sheriff Pelle has maintained on of the most popular and respected roles of any Boulder Sheriff in history. Many think this is largely due to his non-partisan politics approach.

Sheriff Pelle began his law enforcement career decades ago as an Explorer Scout in post 500 in the 1970’s and then moved on to become a certified deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s department in 1980.

Then in 1984 he shifted to the City of Boulder police department where he worked up to the rank of detective commander. Following that, he was elected as the Boulder County Sheriff in 2002.

Sheriff Pelle commented recently that he believes offices like his are less political than many other county offices, and requires an emphasis on certification, training, and expertise. Based on his decades of experience and dedication it seems he has what it takes to do an excellent job.

A quote from a recent Daily Camera article from Sheriff Pelle sums it up well: “If the title were modernized, the sheriff would probably be titled manager of public safety or something like that. We have a responsibility for the jail, alternative sentencing, fires, search and rescue. None of those things should be affected by partisan politics.”
